Challenge
Traditional album listening events require little participation from audiences. Audiences usually sit and listen to pre-released songs without engaging with the work in an intimate way.
Opportunity
As a recording artist and photographer, I saw an opportunity to bring both art forms together to create a first-of-its-kind intimate and immersive experience.
Background
Stark, my debut album, unapologetically explores themes of love, conflict, courage and life, relevant to both the artist and society. In a quest to get the best possible sound quality, I recorded project was recorded in 4 cities in Nigeria and USA: Abuja, Lagos, Cleveland, and the world’s music capital, Nashville. It was released and promoted in Nigeria, South Africa and Europe.
What Stark Sounded Like
Stark is about hope and conflict, about life’s twists and turns, renegade men rising to challenge status quo in a failed system, about war, and about growth. I wanted my audience to feel what I felt creating it.
The Images
Over the course of 6 months, I travelled to various cities in Nigeria creating the body of work from which images were selected for the exhibition.
The Exhibition
I hosted an exhibition of images inspired by the themes and songs on the album. All guests received Silent Disco headphones, which were equipped with 3 different radio channels. 3 songs were broadcast over the radio frequency from the album at every given time.
Guests could switch the channels as they viewed the pictures, creating an immersive experience in a public space.
The Outcome
The exhibition was a historic one for Lagos, Nigeria. We had over 250 guests attend the opening event and sold images worth $7500, 20% of which was donated to the education of Ojo, the male model featured in some of the images.
